Amazon Product Image Requirements in 2026 (Full Checklist)

Amazon's main product image must show the real product on a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255). The product must fill at least 85% of the frame, with no text or logos. The longest side should be at least 1,600 pixels for zoom. Break these rules and Amazon can hide your listing.

This guide covers every image spec for 2026. It covers the strict main image rules. It also covers size, file type, how many photos to add, and the rules for your other slots. You will see where AI can help, and where it can't.

A quick note first. Amazon can change its rules, and each category has its own style guide that wins if the rules ever clash. Check your category's style guide in Seller Central before a big photo update.

Amazon Main Image Requirements

The main image is the first photo buyers see in search and at the top of your listing. Amazon holds it to strict rules. Every main image has to look clean next to the others on the page.

Your main image must:

  • Show the real product, not a drawing, render or box shot.
  • Sit on a pure white background. White blends into Amazon's pages.
  • Fill at least 85% of the frame, so the product is easy to see.
  • Have no text, logos, borders, color blocks, watermarks or added graphics.
  • Have no props or extra items that don't come with the product.
  • Show the whole product, in focus, with no cut-off edges.

People can't appear in the main image, with one exception: clothing. More on that below.

This is the one image where AI can get you in trouble. An AI tool that drops your product onto a clean white background is fine. An AI tool that adds a prop, a shadow shaped like a logo, or a "best seller" badge is not. For the full policy, see our guide on whether Amazon allows AI product images.

The same candle twice. The left passes Amazon: real product, pure white, nothing added. The right is rejected because it has a 50 percent off badge, a leaf prop, and a free gift text banner
The same candle. A badge, a prop, or text turns a compliant main image into a rejected one.

Amazon Image Size and Resolution

Size decides whether buyers can zoom in on your product. Zoom helps people trust what they are buying, so you want it on.

  • Smallest: 1,000 pixels on the longest side. Below this, zoom turns off.
  • Best: 1,600 pixels or more on the longest side. This gives a sharp zoom on big screens.
  • Largest: 10,000 pixels on the longest side.

Aim for about 2,000 pixels on the longest side. It zooms well, looks sharp on phones, and stays under the size limit. Square images (1:1) are the safest shape, since they fit Amazon's grid without white bars on the sides.

Amazon Image File Types and File Size

Amazon accepts JPEG, PNG, TIFF and GIF. Use JPEG (.jpg) for product photos. It is the format Amazon prefers and it keeps files small.

A few file rules to remember:

  • Animated GIFs do not work. Only still images show.
  • Name the file with your product's code (its SKU or a product ID), not a random string.
  • Keep the file a reasonable size. A photo around 2,000 pixels saved as JPEG stays small and loads fast.

If you also sell on Shopify, the specs there are different. Our Shopify product image size guide covers them.

How Many Images Can You Add to an Amazon Listing?

You can add up to 9 images to most listings. About 6 of them show on the listing before a buyer has to scroll or click. So the first 6 do the most work.

A simple order that works for most products:

  1. Main image. Real product on white.
  2. Angles. The product from the back, side or top.
  3. Close-up. A real photo of texture, a label or a detail.
  4. In use. The product being used or worn.
  5. Lifestyle. The product in a room or setting.
  6. Infographic. Size, what's in the box, or key features with a little text.
The 6 main Amazon image slots: slot 1 main image on white, then angles, close-up, in use, lifestyle, and an infographic
Fill the first 6 slots. Slot 1 must be plain. Slots 2 to 6 can sell.

Amazon Secondary and Lifestyle Image Rules

Your other photos (slots 2 and up) have much looser rules. This is where you get to sell, and where AI helps most.

On secondary images you can use:

  • A background that is not white: a room, a table, a colored backdrop.
  • Text and callouts, like "machine washable" or "holds 20 oz".
  • Lifestyle scenes that show the product in use.
  • Infographics that explain size or features.

This is the perfect job for AI. Your candle can sit on a cozy table, next to flowers, or in a holiday scene, all from one photo. Each of these can be a secondary image, an ad or a social post. Just keep the product itself accurate, and check every image before you upload it. See why AI product photos look fake for what to watch.

Use a real photo for anything a buyer could return the item over. That means close-ups of small text, and the true color and size.

Amazon Image Rules by Category (Clothing, Shoes, Jewelry)

Each category has its own style guide. It wins if it ever clashes with the general rules. Here are a few common ones.

  • Clothing: main images should show the item on a model, not flat or on a hanger. This is the one case where a person appears in the main image.
  • Shoes: show a single shoe, usually the left one, at a side angle on white.
  • Jewelry: close, sharp shots matter. Our AI jewelry product photography guide covers this.

Always open your category's style guide in Seller Central before you shoot or generate a set of images.

How to Make Amazon-Ready Product Photos

You don't need a studio to meet these rules. You can start with one clear photo of your product and build the rest.

  1. Take a sharp, well-lit photo of your product on a plain surface.
  2. For the main image, put it on a pure white background and check it fills the frame.
  3. For slots 2 to 6, add angles, a close-up, and a lifestyle scene or two.
  4. Make sure each image is at least 1,600 pixels on the longest side.
  5. Put each image next to your real product and check nothing changed.

An AI product photo tool can do most of steps 2 and 3 from your one photo. A white background for the main image, then lifestyle scenes for the rest. Not sure which photo belongs in slot 1? See should you use AI for your main listing image.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Amazon's main image requirements?+

Amazon's main image must show the real product on a pure white background, RGB 255, 255, 255. The product must fill at least 85% of the frame. It can't have text, logos, borders, watermarks or props. The longest side should be at least 1,000 pixels so buyers can zoom, and 1,600 pixels or more is better. People can't appear, except on clothing.

What size should Amazon product images be?+

Amazon images must be at least 1,000 pixels on the longest side to turn on zoom. The most is 10,000 pixels. Amazon recommends 1,600 pixels or more for a sharp zoom. A good target is about 2,000 pixels on the longest side, saved as a JPEG. Square images (1:1) fit Amazon's grid best and avoid white bars on the sides.

How many images can I add to an Amazon listing?+

You can add up to 9 images to most Amazon listings. About 6 of them show before a buyer scrolls or clicks, so the first 6 matter most. A common order is a main image on white, angle shots, a close-up, then lifestyle and infographic images. Only the main image follows the strict rules. Your other photos can use scenes, props and text.

Can I use AI images on Amazon?+

Yes, with limits. AI is fine for secondary and lifestyle images. It can also put your product on a clean white background for the main image. It is not fine to add props, text or badges, or to change the product itself. Always compare each AI image with your real product before you upload, so the photo matches what buyers receive.

Why did Amazon reject or hide my product image?+

Common reasons: the main image is not pure white, or the product fills less than 85% of the frame. Text, logos or props on the main image also cause it. Images under 1,000 pixels get flagged too, and so do drawings used in place of a real product. Always check your category's style guide in Seller Central, since category rules override the general ones.
